About Project

In the heart of Sydney, the towering silos of Glebe Island stand as a testament to the city’s industrial heritage. Over the years, these silos have transformed from mere storage units to iconic landmarks, thanks to the innovative use of advertising billboards. One of the most memorable transformations of the silos was in the early 1990s when they were painted to mimic Grecian columns, supporting Sydney’s bid for the 2000 Olympic Games. This artistic endeavour not only captured the city’s Olympic spirit but also drew attention from motorists on the Anzac Bridge.

The billboard, once touted as the largest in the southern hemisphere, was initially intended to be a temporary installation. However, it has since become a permanent fixture, with various advertisers showcasing their brands over the years. Notably, the now-defunct airline Ansett was one of the first advertisers to grace the billboard, marking a significant chapter in the silo’s advertising history.

Behind the scenes of this iconic transformation was Mascot Steel. The company was entrusted with the crucial task of building the structure that would support the billboard on the silos. Their involvement was not just limited to providing materials; they played a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and durability of the signage. Using their top-tier steel products, Mascot Steel constructed a robust framework that could withstand the challenges posed by the environment and the weight of the massive billboard.

Their commitment to excellence and precision ensured that the billboard remained securely anchored to the silos, allowing advertisers to showcase their brands with confidence. Mascot Steel’s contribution to this project underscores its reputation as a trusted partner in infrastructure development and their ability to deliver quality work on a grand scale.
